The Trade Show Packing Paradox

The Trade Show Packing Paradox

There's a phenomenon in the trade show industry that science has yet to adequately explain.

An exhibit arrives at a convention center neatly packed into its cases, with every component occupying its designated space. Someone clearly put considerable thought into making everything fit.

Three days later, none of it fits.

The exhibit hasn't grown. The cases haven't shrunk. Yet somehow, you're staring at a pile of equipment that apparently traveled to the show in a completely different dimension.

Where did that come from?

The first mystery usually appears in the form of a cable.

Nobody remembers using it, but it looks important enough that throwing it away feels irresponsible. So, into the case it goes, assuming there's still room.

This is also when someone discovers that a perfectly ordinary piece of equipment no longer fits in the compartment it came out of. Naturally, everyone has a suggestion, although nobody remembers how it was originally packed.

Eventually, someone declares that it fit on the way here. An observation that is both completely accurate and spectacularly unhelpful.

The science of packing in reverse

There's something almost beautiful about move-in. Everything comes out of its case with a sense of purpose, and the empty packaging disappears until it's needed again.

Move-out is another story entirely.

The packing diagram, assuming one ever existed, is nowhere to be found. Everyone remembers a slightly different version of how things went together, and there's a growing suspicion that whoever packed everything originally was a secret Tetris master.

By the time the last case is closed, nobody is particularly interested in understanding what happened.

Until someone spots the graphic bag still sitting against the wall.

An unsolved industry mystery

Perhaps exhibit materials expand after prolonged exposure to convention center air conditioning. Perhaps cases mysteriously lose internal volume while sitting in storage.

Whatever the explanation, the Trade Show Packing Paradox remains unsolved.

And somewhere, right now, someone is standing in a convention center, looking at an open case and saying five very familiar words.

"I swear it all fit."
