Linking Social Media with Exhibiting

by Marketing 8/7/2008 9:06:00 AM

For the past few years, I’ve seen how social media has become more than a hype. It has evolved into one of the most powerful vehicles in brand and cause marketing. But how does social media fit in with your exhibiting plan?

The answer lies in your pre-show promotions. With social media, you can publicize your participation in an upcoming show through blogs, social networking sites such as LinkedIn or Facebook, and through web-based communities that your target attendees belong to. All you need is a little bit of research.

So don’t just leave your pre-show invitations to emails. Expand your online horizons. You’ll be surprised how much you can do and how far you can get with a click of a mouse and an internet browser!

Hi Mabel,

Great post. In addition to pre-show attendance building, social media can vastly improve an exhibitors experience before, during and after a trade show.

First, the exhibitor, as you expressed, has the opportunity to begin conversation with potential attendees, on a community-wide basis. This can help create a better and more targeted result in display, and the attendee can be more prepared for what to expect at the booth.
Second, social media allows for video and photo sharing of the trade event to be instantly uploaded, not only to the exhibitor's blog or homepage, but to sharing-sites such as Flickr and YouTube. For example, demo videos of a new product and customer reaction could be harvested at the show and made viral within the day.
Third, the conversation can take on whole new levels following the face-to-face. It's one thing to gather leads and send them a pitch. It's another to gather leads and have them join the exhibitor's community (with reciprocal links), which in turn helps promote the attendee's business or cause. That level of ongoing contact is the new edge in marketing.
The web was never computers talking to computers, it's people talking to people, and Social Media is a manifestation of that realization.

All the best,
